Bull Street Revitalization Project is Leaving an Environmental Impact

Columbia (SC): The Bull Street District is a 20 year revitalization project in the city of Columbia with the goal of transforming the capital city of South Carolina into the new hub of the urban south. Recently, Hughes Development Corporation, announced that they will be adding a new office and retail building to the project that will be built with more sustainable resources than concrete or steel which is what most building’s exteriors are made out of.

The Building will look like this in 2022 when completed

The exterior of the building will be made out of cross laminate timber which is more sustainable than steel or concrete because both of those materials are big polluters of carbon dioxide according to, Dr. Michael Bizimis, a University of South Carolina professor in the School of Environmental Science. “Concrete is one of the biggest polluters in CO2, so if you don’t have to do that and you use wood then the emissions are associated with a building construction are much lower. So yes the construction has a lower environmental impact.”

What the Bull Street District currently has to offer

All though the Bull Street District is only in year six of the 20 year project there are still opportunities to visit the district and explore some of the locations that have already opened such as Segra Ball Park and a new REI location that recently open a few months ago. A new Starbucks will also be opening up in the district soon.
